Determination of Design Discharge of Canal

Problem 1: A canal commands an irrigation area of 440 ha. The duty of water on the foeld during the peak period is 220 ha/cumec.
Determine the design discharge of the canal at the off take if the water loss in the canal is 30%.


Solution:
Discharge = (440/ 220) cumec
                 = 2 cumec

Design discharge after 30% water loss = (2/0.7)= 2.86 cumec

Answer: 2.86 cumec



Problem 2: A canal commands an irrigation area of 350 hectare. The peak field irrigation requirement is 9 mm/day. Determine the design discharge of the canal at the off take, water loss is 25%.


Solution:
Peak discharge value = (350 * 104 * 9 * 10-3) m3/day
                                   = 31500 m3/day

Design Discharge      =  31500/0.75 m3/day
                                  =  42000 m3/day

Answer:  42000 m3/day
